Mr Brooke is among 70 expert mathematics teachers from schools across England that recently took part in an exchange with a partner school in Shanghai as part of the Maths Hubs programme. The purpose of the exchange is to further develop the understanding and implementation of mastery approaches to teaching maths in our school, and in local partner schools he will be working with during the school year 2017-2018.This is one part of the Teaching for Mastery Programme, run by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) in conjunction with the Maths Hubs programme, and funded by the DfE. Mr Brooke visited Shanghai in September this year, and two partner teachers from Shanghai have just completed a two week stay with us here at Alexandra Park Primary.
Mathematics teachers Gu and Ivy taught maths in Year 3 and Year 5 during their two week stay. As always, the children were welcoming and hard working. Gu and Ivy both commented on how impressed they were not only with the maths ability of the children but also by the caring and aspirational nature of them all.
During the two week period teachers from many other schools came to watch the lessons being taught by our guests. During the last two days of their stay as many as 80 teaching professionals were observing at any one time. We were extraordinarily impressed with how well the children took it all in their stride! The lessons taught were truly outstanding and we look forward to implementing the Teaching for Mastery Programme further here at Alexandra Park.
